Sophomore year is kind of the weirdest year for high schoolers. However, it is still a crucial year for extracurricular activities and getting a head start on the workload that'll be dumped on you for the last two years in high school.
As a sophomore in high school you might have harder classwork and more Advanced Placement classes. You might even be starting to think about college! So, here are the best tips for sophomores in high school that will lead to the most successful sophomore year.
1. Become Active in Your Extracurriculars
By now you should have picked out 4-5 extracurricular activities (in-school or out-of-school) you would like to continue to be a part of for your next three years. Sophomore year is a critical year for you to shine in extracurricular activities. For every activity, make sure to become an active member and start taking on leadership roles. Although not necessary, leadership roles will help you gain some experience for the future, and can even help you out when it comes to college admissions. You want to get the maximum out of your activity!
2. Maybe Get a Head Start on Standardized Tests
Other than extracurricular activities, it might be a good time to start studying for any standardized tests you'll be taking in junior year. For example, the SAT/ACT tests will be available to take starting the beginning of your junior year. If you would like to get the test over with, it is better to take practice tests later in your sophomore year and then take the official tests early on in junior year, maybe even in the summer before your junior year. This is the perfect way to get the test out of the way, and take off a giant chunk of stress of your shoulders.
If you're not interested in taking the tests early, then that is completely normal. Usually juniors take their official exams in the second half of their year. However, it is a good idea to take some practice tests later on in your sophomore year to get an idea on how prepared you are.
3. Try Visiting Colleges
(if it applies to you)
I know. I know. Thinking about college is stressful, and many of you may not even want to think about thinking the word. Well, in my defense, you're going to be a lot more frustrated next year so might as well start now.
There are approximately 5,300 colleges in the United States, so there are a LOT of options. Usually college visits occur during the spring, so you might want to start visiting colleges in your area to get a feel for the type of environment you might live in for the years after high school.
You might even want to study abroad. Now that's cool!
4. Have Fun
Sophomore year is the year before a whole amount of responsibility is thrown on your back. So don't hold yourself back from trying new things and talking to new people. Be positive, stay motivated, and be confident about who you are. Don't forget that high school isn't supposed to be easy, so make sure to have fun on your crazy journey ahead.
