Having a positive mindset is important, but what are we supposed to do?

I've talked about the importance of a positive mindset, but it's not that easy to change in one night. However, there are many things you can do to start being positive.

Self-Esteem Talks

When being positive you should always start with respecting yourself. Giving yourself pep-talks in the morning before you start your day will help you acknowledge your daily goals and your worth. For example, let's say you had a math test tomorrow and you've been studying hard, a pep-talk could as simple as this:

"Today, I'm going to ace this math test because I studied very hard, and I know I can get an A. Let's do this!

or this:

"Today is the day I'm going to take my math test and get an A, because I'm smart, a hard worker, and I studied very hard for this test, I deserve this A, and I'm gonna get this A. Let's go!

Your pep-talk should be the way you want it to be. If talking to yourself is too awkward you can write down a little note for yourself. Just talk to yourself like you would to your best friend.

Giving yourself pep-talks everyday will help build your self-esteem, and make you feel better about yourself. You also will start working harder towards your goals, which soon enough will help you achieve them.

Make A Mantra

Whether it be a mantra, motto, or slogan (whatever you want to call it), you can create a rule that you want to follow everyday. It can be a restriction to your old self, or a new long-term goal you want to achieve. It should be something that helps you regain motivation to get through your day, positively. Something like...

"It'll get better!"

or this:

"You can do it!"

or even:

"LET'S GO! HUSTLE!"

Start Talking Healthy

The way we speak makes a big difference on how we feel. Positive words will keep us calm, and negative words will make us more stressed out. I've quoted this article before, however, I'm going to quote it again because it provides the same purpose:

"a single negative word can increase the activity in our amygdala (the fear center of the brain). This releases dozens of stress-producing hormones and neurotransmitters, which in turn interrupts our brains’ functioning. " According to Andrew Newberg, M.D. and Mark Robert Waldman. Here is a link to the article for more information, https://psychcentral.com/blog/words-can-change-your-brain-2/

Even though we use negative words to release stress, the stress about the conflict still remains. So instead of using negative words to relieve stress, use positive words. You can even use your mantra.

Also, instead of starting off a conversation being negative like...

"I'm so tired, I want to go home."

say this:

"I'm gonna breeze through my classes today, so when I get home I'm gonna take a nice nap."

or maybe start off light:

"I just had the best waffles for breakfast today."

A positive start to a conversation will actually make you feel better and start your brain off in a more positive environment. This is especially important for teenagers because of the loads of work they are hit with at school.

There are multiple ways to become a more positive person, and these steps can be the start to your wonderful transformation.
